Project Title: Molecular speciation of white fish
BTTG Supervisors: Dr Paul F Hamlyn & Dr Gordon Nelson
Academic Supervisor: Professor David Coates, School of Biology

Stocks of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are dwindling due to over fishing, as a result cod has become a premium product and therefore a target for adulteration with other species of white fish (e.g. pollock, hake, haddock, whiting and coley) in processed foods. Paul has developing DNA based speciation tests to differentiate between these species. In addition, the phylogenetic relationship between the economically important species of the order Gadiformes has been investigated.
